How To Mold A Mouth Guard In 6 Easy Steps

Combat sports are hard knock pursuits. Therefore, some pieces of equipment are not optional. Unless you want a very painful transition to false teeth, a mouth protector is essential for combat sports – including grappling! The importance of this simple but effective bit of equipment, cannot be underestimated. Dentistry is expensive and a broken grill hurts like hell. So don’t just make sure you buy a mouth guard, make sure you properly mould it to fit your mouth.

How To ‘Boil & Bite’ Mold Your Mouthpiece:

When you first hear you have to fit your mouth piece by boiling it, it sounds like a daunting task. It isn’t! A ‘boil & bite’ fitting is quick, easy and safe.

Here at Nak Muay Wholesale, we recommend the Fairtex MG3 Mouthguard. This is because it has a heavy duty rubber shock frame. Also, a wave design with high level shock absorption qualities to provide maximum protection to the upper and lower jaw. The MG3 has Gel-Fit Liner which easily moulds to your unique dental pattern when softened in boiling water and then bitten.

So in our opinion, it is quite simply the best mouthguard made in Thailand, for it’s price range. Once you have bought your gum shield, follow these simple steps below to mold a mouth guard:

6 steps to fitting your boxing mouthguard:

Gather these items – Mirror, fork or spoon, kettle or pot, water, timer, bowl, ice water

1 – Make sure you read the manufacturer’s guide to find out exactly how long they recommend to submerge it in boiling water. You need to get the right timing to soften Fairtex’s unique Gel-Fit Liner. Do not skip this step! Once you have done this, move on to the next step.

2 – Don’t heat the water with the gum shield in it. Boil the water separately and set the timer using the Fairtex specifications. When the water is boiling, remove from the heat and submerge the mouthguard.

3 – Start the timer.

4 – When the timer beeps, remove the mouthpiece with the fork or spoon. Set aside on the counter top as you turn on the cold faucet. Let the cold run for a few seconds then run the water over the mouthguard for 1 to 2 seconds.

5 – When it is cool enough to put in your mouth, in front of the mirror, line it up so it goes in your mouth straight. Make sure it is level in your mouth. When you are confident that it is level, bite down firmly and count to 10. This will mould the mouthguard to your unique dental imprint. Make sure it feels comfortable and snug.

6 – If you are happy with the fit, quickly submerge the mouthguard in the ice water for a few minutes to set it.

Pro tip: Mold your mouthguard the day before to avoid using it for at least 8 hours. This ensures it will set properly.
